Why shouldn’t you use makeup remover wipes? The good and bad makeup removers

Makeup remover wipes are a fast way to clean skin and due to the fact that you don’t have to use anything apart from the wipe – no water or cosmetic or even a towel. Where’s the catch? Allow us to explain why you shouldn’t use makeup remover wipes and what you should use in their place.

Why shouldn’t you use makeup remover wipes?

1. Makeup remover wipes do not cleanse skin thoroughly enough

Even though makeup remover wipes get rid of cosmetics such as foundation or waterproof mascara, it cannot handle the dirt build-up in the pores. On the contrary, it can even increase it which will lead to pimples and blackheads. Makeup remover wipes smudge makeup all over the face instead of removing it and do the same with the dirt, sebum, and bacteria. The product used to soak wipes with dissolves cosmetics but the residues mix with sebum and bacteria on the skin. It could be prevented by the water which is not used for makeup removal with wipes. Without the water, some of the makeup stays on the wipe and the rest on the face and when you apply the rubbing motion you make the dirt build-up in pores.

2. Makeup remover wipes contain harmful ingredients

So that makeup remover wipes can be effective, intense substances need to be used and those are often dangerous for the skin. When it comes to the wipes, we are talking about detergents and preservatives such as:

  • 2-bromo-2-nitro-1,3-propanediol – a chemical known to emit toxic formaldehyde;
  • iodopropynyl butylcarbamate and cocamidopropyl betaine – preservative and detergent which are known to dry skin and lead to premature aging.

3. Makeup remover wipes cause irritations

The irritation causing factor may be the substances contained in the wipes but also their uneven texture. It will be the worst for the sensitive skin, especially if makeup remover wipes are used on a daily basis. Regular use of wipes can lead to spider veins and redness.

What should you use instead of makeup remover wipes?

Makeup remover wipes do not necessarily have to end up on the no go list. All is for people if used in moderation. You can use makeup remover wipes from time to time, for example when camping. However, on the day to day basis you should definitely replace them. Makeup removal should match skin type and its needs. Therefore, for dry skin consider makeup removal with oils because such cosmetic can most efficiently dissolve dirt. It is best when it contains exclusively natural oils, e.g. coconut oil, castor oil, grape seed oil, avocado oil, and vitamin E. Makeup remover oil removes all cosmetics and leaves skin nourished. You can use oils to enhance cream or to nourish dry hair ends. After oil application, you need to wash your face with gentle foam or gel, free from sulfates.

On the other hand, for the oily skin better are light cosmetics because those do not leave a greasy layer on the skin surface. Then proceed with tonic or mist with glycerin or hyaluronic acid. This type of substance holds properties binding water so it prevents dryness. Even before tonic or mist is able to dry, you need to proceed with serum and cream.
